The Whitehorse Curling Club is gearing up for the start of the 2008-09 season, which will begin on Sept. 29 with the Monday night mixed league.

The club offers several different leagues, which vary in skill level and overall cost.

There is a lot of buzz this year with both league play and other activities scheduled at the club, which has curling officials excited about the season.

"It looks like it's going to be an exciting season," said Jon Solberg, the business manager at the Whitehorse Curling Club.

"We have lots of calls, lots of interest. We have had some good advertising for the upcoming season and we have done a brochure mail out with Canada Post to get information out to each house hold and it's actually made it to over 7,800 homes here in Whitehorse, so there's a bit of a buzz here. I'm hoping that it will carry right through registration into the curling season."

The best way to register for league play is by coming down to the curling club this weekend from noon to four p.m., but interested individuals can also call Solberg at 667.2875 or through email at info@whitehorsecurlingclub.com.

The two most expensive leagues at the curling club are the Tuesday Night Skookum League and the Thursday Night Open League, which are a little more competitive than the rest of week. The two leagues are each $215 to participate in for individual members on a team.

The Monday Night Mixed League is $185 per person. Teams in the mixed league must have two male and two female players.

Last year, the league had 10 teams by the end of the season and the Whitehorse Curling Club is hoping to start off with that same number this year.

Another option is the Wednesday night league, which includes a separate competition for male and female teams. The Wednesday night league also cost $185 per person.

The final league during the week is the Friday Night Fun League, which is the cheapest because curlers will lose a few days throughout the season as a result of the club holding some of its longer bonspiels. The Fun League costs $160 per person.

Solberg said he would recommend the Monday, Wednesday and Friday night leagues for new curlers.

"The other two are a little bit more competitive," he said. "The Tuesday night is for the avid competitive curler. Thursday night is for more recreational curlers transitioning to the competitive stage, but we certainly wouldn't turn people away from either league."

There are also discounts for new curlers to the club and as well for people who sign up to play in two or more leagues. Curlers who signup for two leagues receive a 10 per cent discount on the combined total, while individuals that sign up for three or more are given a 25 per cent discount on the overall total.

Curlers that are new to the club receive a 10 per cent discount. If first-timer curler in the club signs up for more than one league, he or she would receive a 10 per cent discount towards the highest priced league and then an additional 10 or 25 per cent on the combined total of the remaining leagues.

The club also offers programs for junior members, which include Saturday Rockers for curlers who are five and up. Saturday Rockers includes seven sessions before Christmas and then seven sessions after Christmas. The cost is $40. Thursday will also include a junior league for players under the age of 19.

If individuals miss this weekend's signup, they can register the following weekend at the club from noon to four p.m.
