The Whitehorse Canadian Tire hockey team also won gold this past weekend, while the Female Mustangs brought home the silver medal.

The teams, who were playing in the Territorial Bantam Hockey Championships in Haines Junction, defeated three opponents on their way to the championships.

At the conclusion of the preliminary play, the Canadian Tire team, Takhini Transport and Northwestel all ended up tied for first place.

The Scotia Bank Female Mustangs ended up in fourth place.

Female Mustangs head coach, Louis Bouchard, said all the games were fast paced and kept close, evidenced by the three-way tie.

Using the amount of goals each team had scored in the tournament, the playoff seedings were set and the games got underway on Sunday morning.

The Mustangs were the first on the ice and defeated the Dawson/Haines Junction team in a 4-2 victory.

Bouchard said things finally got rolling for the team on Sunday, who had been plagued by injuries.

Dana Van Vliet picked up two goals and one assist, and Natalja Blanchard had two assists for the Mustangs.

The Canadian Tire team were next up and began their championship push with a 7-2 victory over Northwestel. Scott Meredith scored six of the seven goals.

In the bronze medal match up, the Female Mustangs defeated Takhini Transport by a score of 2-1.

The win put the Mustangs into the finals against the Canadian Tire team.

The Mustangs, who were playing their seventh game in the last 48 hours, played hard but were unable to stop Canadian Tire, who secured an 8-0 victory.

Bouchard said the Mustangs just "ran out of legs,” after playing through a rigorous schedule against strong opponents.

"I'm really proud of all the players,” he said.

"Because of injury we had to move players to different positions. Not one player played her normal position all weekend. We were moving defenseman to centres and forwards to defence, switching players left and right.

"And they were still able to execute our game plan and run our systems.”

Spencer Lasard, Scott Meredith and Andrew Glada did the scoring for Canadian Tire.

The tournament was the first championship to use the newly installed dressing rooms at the Bill Brewster Arena in Haines Junction.

The $1 million renovations, funded by the Village of Haines Junction and the Yukon Government's Community Development Fund, were a hit with the players.

Mustangs are next heading to BC Midget Provincials in Salmon Arm on March 17th.
