Whitehorse area golf courses set to open over the weekend

Spring has officially sprung, and it's time to dig those golf clubs out of your basement.

Mountain View Golf Course will be opening up their temporary greens tomorrow at noon, says director of golf Jeff Wiggins.

The front nine holes will be open to the public on temporary greens, as the irrigation system is still frozen.

Wiggins says they hope to open up the entire 18-hole course next week, and move onto the regular greens by the second weekend in May.

The temporary greens are set just off to the side of the regular greens, Wiggins said, to protect the grass.

Because of the lack of an irrigation system this early in the year, the grass is unable to withstand human traffic until it is fed.

"The minute the plants get food, we can get people on them,” Wiggins said.

Wiggins said this is the earliest they have ever been able to have golfers on the course.

‘This is record early for us,” he said.

As far as he can remember, April 24 is the earliest date they have been open in previous years.

Wiggins cites the lack of snowfall and the mild temperatures this winter for the quick start to the golf season.

"We're excited,' he said.

Wiggins hopes the course will be fully operational by the second weekend in May, weather permitting.

"That's the goal anyway,” he said. "We're doing our darndest.”

As for the Meadow Lakes golf course, an official could not be reached for comment as of press time, but a recording from the course's phone line says it will open on Saturday, and tee times are currently being booked.

For disc golf enthusiasts, Whitehorse Disc Golf Association member Dave Griffiths says the course is open and ready to play, barring a few holes that are damp.

"It's still kind of muddy at the bottom, (but) have at ‘er,” Griffiths said.

He says to keep an eye out for some holes that may not be ready to play, but anyone is welcome to head up to the course, located off of Hamilton Boulevard.

"I would say that some holes might still be a little iffy,” Griffiths said.

Whitehorse's disc golf league won't begin until about the 11th of May, Griffiths said, depending on how well the course dries up, but the public is more than welcome to head out and try their hand at disc golf.

"It's open to play,” Griffiths said.
