What’s new and coming up at the CWG

Week two of the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta., are gearing up. Outside of hockey and squash who competed on Sunday, the rest of the athletes had to wait until Monday for their events to begin. Well, Monday is in the books, so let’s look at how they did and what their upcoming schedule looks like.
We will start with alpine skiing and the super G event. On the boys’ side, Wesley Vangel was the top Yukon finisher coming 34th. Naoise Dempsey, Clayton Michael Chapman, Orin Gladwin, and Charlie Hawes, came 53rd, 54th, 59th, and 62nd.
The Yukon’s lone female alpine skier Greta Gladwin came in 52nd.
The alpine skiing continues today at the Nakiska Ski Resort. The athletes will be competing in giant slalom.
In male singles badminton, Anton Menzel made it to round three before losing to Mathieu Morneau of Quebec.
In girls’ singles Lily Kremer, Gabrielle Belanger, and Shayla Kremer did not advance past the second round.
In girls’ doubles, the team of Belanger and Lily Kremer dropped their game Monday to the team from Alberta.
In boys’ doubles, the team of Lukas Sebastian Kobler and Anton Menzel dropped their match Monday 2-0 to the Manitoba team. The team of Austin Meng Au and Carl Knickle dropped their match 2-0 to the Quebec team.
The mixed doubles team of Shayla and Tristan Kremer dropped their opening encounter 2-0 to the P.E.I. team.
Moving to the trails and cross-country skiing, Natalie Hynes nearly found the podium in the 7.5-kilometre free interval start race. She completed the race in 23:02.80 good for fourth.
Amanda Thomson and Hannah Deuling came in the top 20 placing 16th and 19th respectively. Sonjaa Schmidt and Hannah Jirousek came in one after the other in 29th and 30th.
The boys’ race was 10-kilometres long. Derek Dueling completed his race in 23:37.40 good for ninth. Sasha Masson grabbed the 23rd spot and Jamie Phillips-Freedman, Ben Puskas, and Marcus Deuling came 44th, 48th, and 54th.
Both the boys and the girls will race today in free sprint races.
The figure skaters were in action yesterday evening in the singles pre-novice female. On Monday, the two Yukon skaters completed their short program routine. On Wednesday they will perform their free routine and the two scores will be totalled together.
Alissa Russell scored a 17.24 for her short program skate. Jamie Nickel skated to a 14.43.
Mikayla Kramer will be competing today and Thursday in the singles novice female.
In hockey, the team took the ice against P.E.I. and fell short 13-1. Joy Morin notched the lone goal for the Yukon. The team will play this afternoon against N.W.T.
The squash team had their second encounter in the team competition yesterday. They dropped their match 4-0 against Manitoba. The team will get two cracks at the win column this afternoon as they play P.E.I. and then Ontario.
Quebec currently leads the medal standings with 92 total, 37 are gold. Alberta sits second in the medal count with 51.
Ontario is third, one behind Alberta. B.C. has 33 and Manitoba has 11.
The three territories as well as Newfoundland and Labrador and P.E.I. still sit at zero.
