The local disc golf season is in full swing, thanks to a weekend tournament that saw enthusiasts equipped with a new arsenal of discs.
Thirty-five golfers took part in the 2015 Whitehorse Disc Golf Association Trilogy Challenge held last Saturday at the 18-hole Mount McIntyre course.
The event saw participants equipped with three new discs in exchange for tournament fees. Players were then restricted to use only the new discs – a driver, mid-range and putter.
Jesse Devost was the big winner, shooting an even-54 par from the tournament tees. Curtis Barker finished second at plus-two while Kenton Anderson and Sheldon Casselman tied for third at four over.
“I was surprised that my score won the title, because there are a lot of excellent golfers in Whitehorse,” Devost admitted. “In the 15 years I’ve been playing disc golf in Whitehorse, this was the best-organized and attended
tournament I’ve seen. The sport is really growing here and it’s awesome to see so many people joining the fun.”
Despite an ace on hole 15, group president Ryan Norquay finished 13th out of 18 advanced players at plus-10.
Noel Sinclair shot a 60 to earn the grandmaster title. In recreational play, Luka van Randen finished six-under from the regular tees, while Egle Barnes was the top female at six-over.
“I was very pleased with the amount of competitors that came out,” said Norquay. “The trilogy is a pretty cool program.”
Players received three new discs from Dynamic Discs, Westside Discs and Latitude 64 as a means of promoting the sport.
“This challenge sets you up with the right tools, and we were there to be able to coach some new players through it,” Norquay said.
Whitehorse was also recently chosen by Discmania’s DiscGolfPark to be the site of a Canadian pilot project.
With the Takhini North course seeing less use due to the popularity of the trails for cyclists, dog walkers and hikers, Norquay has set up a new 18-hole course near Yukon College.
The space is currently reserved for the college’s expansion, but Norquay has high hopes moving forward.
“We’d really like to be able to grow with the college as they grow into a university, and be able to have this recreation component, not only for our community, but for students, too.”
Anyone interested in taking up the sport is invited to join the club’s Facebook group: Whitehorse Disc Golf Association.
