When the dust settled, Cameron Webber once again stood victorious in the season’s first squash tournament.
Webber beat defending champion Mustafa Syed 3-0 to win the Early Bird squash tournament Saturday afternoon at Better Bodies Fitness.
The matches were closer than the final score showed, however. Webber edged Syed 15-10, 15-12 and 18-16 in the A draw championship final.
Webber didn’t lose a single match en route to reclaiming the same tournament he won in 2013.
The 33-year-old opened his tournament by dispatching Josh O’Brien 3-0 Friday night.
On Saturday, he shut out Sam Penner 3-0, setting up his final with the 18-year-old Syed.
Webber is one of four new coaches running the junior program following an organizational shakeup last month. He could not be reached by the Star this morning.
A total of 29 players participated in the Early Bird tournament, as opposed to 44 last year.
Sponsors included Earls Restaurant and Bar, Domino’s Pizza, Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters, and Winterlong Brewing
Co.
Other winners included Chris Toleman, who won the Mixed B division 3-2 over Doug Thorseth in a hotly contested final. Toleman prevailed with scores going 15-12, 15-7, 12-15, 13-15 and 15-8.
Finally, Jason Steele took the Mixed C division 3-0 over Gareth Earl with match wins of 15-8, 15-8 and 15-10.
The local squash season is slated to get underway in the first week of November with Div. 1 playing Tuesdays and Div. 2 playing Thursdays.
Last year’s champions are Aurora Geosciences, who edged Assante 16-14 to win the Div. 1 league title, and Yukon Brewing, who took the Div. 2 crown 19-9 over Bluewave Energy.
The next squash tournament – known as Reservoir Dogs – will take place Nov. 27 and 28.
