Wrestler Brittanee Laverdure also announced her retirement from the sport on Sunday via her private Twitter account.
“The highs and lows of my sport,” Laverdure tweeted Sunday. “Retiring today and ready for the next chapter in my life.”
That was followed by an image of Laverdure’s many Team Canada jerseys, with the words: “Retiring 14 (years) after I started wearing the maple leaf.”
The 33-year-old indicated to the Star in May that her final career goal was to represent Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The five-foot-three, 128-pound sparkplug competed last weekend in the Canadian Wrestling team trials in Strathcona County, Alta., in the 53-kilogram category, where she was ranked second.
However, Laverdure lost her bout to New Brunswick’s Samantha Stewart, who finished the weekend as the top-ranked wrestler in the Olympic weight class.
Laverdure did not respond to multiple requests for comment before press time today.
Best known for her silver medal win at the Commonwealth Games last year in 55-kg freestyle, Laverdure now works as a lawyer in Calgary.
