Waterreus, Greer repeat in Yukon Championships

Dej‡ vu? No, just the Yukon Championships.

Dej‡ vu? No, just the Yukon Championships.

Duplicating last year's performance in the territorial cross country ski championships, Stephen Waterreus and Brittany Greer took top honours in the senior divisions for the second year in a row.

Held at Mt. MacIntyre, the Yukon Championships took place using a two day format, with an individual start classic technique race on Saturday, followed by a pursuit style free technique, or skating, race on Sunday.

While skiers start on the first day with the usual 15 seconds gap separating them, their finish time dictates their start on the second day.

Senior skiers followed a challenging 11-kilometre course each day. Midget and juvenile skiers skied 4.25-km while pee wee and mini midgets followed a 2.75-km route.

In the senior event, Waterreus handily finished first in the classic event on Saturday in front of Glenn Iceton. On Sunday, with Iceton absent, Waterreus was never challenged and, despite a fall, finished over seven minutes ahead of brother Marcus, who had picked up two spots through the course of the race.

Greer was also fastest on both days, finishing Saturday's classic event ahead of veteran skier Sara Nielsen. Nielsen bowed out of the competition on Sunday, leaving Yukon Ski Team member Heather Enders to take second spot in the senior women's category.

The Greer family had a pretty successful day. David Greer, competing in the juvenile boys category, finished second behind Ray Sabo while Janelle Greer dominated the midget girls races with convincing wins in both of her races. And not to be outdone by her children, mother Lorrie Greer took the bronze medal in the senior women's pursuit.

In the juvenile girls category, Emily Nishikawa out-skied her competition both days, as did Colin Abbott in the midget boys.

Kendra Murray took top honours in the minimidget girls category, while Dahria Beatty and Fabian Brook rounded out the gold medal contingent, with wins in the pee wee girls and boys categories.

In a new twist, skiers competing in the 11-km and 4.25-km races went through a speed trap on the notorious 'scoop', a tough downhill with a right angle bend at the bottom. With radar clocking courtesy of the RCMP, Yukon Ski Team coach Greg Brown took top honours in the kamikaze category, turning in a speed of 59-km/hr. Fastest females of the day were Janelle Greer, sister Brittany and Sarah Murray, all clocked at 52-km/hr. As the youngest and lightest, Janelle won the speed award for the distaff side.

'We were blessed with perfect conditions this year,' said race organizer Alain Masson. 'The tight competition shows that we have some real talent locally and the superb courses we get to work with bring out the best in our athletes.'
