A Warriors sweep in the Klondike was foiled by their cross-town rivals last weekend.
F.H. Collins Secondary School took victory in the senior boys, junior boys, and junior girls divisions, while the senior girls finished second only to the Vanier Crusaders.
“If it was the Olympics, F.H. Collins won,” said Warriors senior boys head coach Nathan Bingham. “In senior girls, we had our silver and in every other division we won gold. F.H. hasn’t done that in recallable history. So it’s been a really good year.”
The senior boys’ win was especially brilliant, as the school’s B team downed the A team 2-0 in the semifinals before earning the title with a 2-1 win over the Porter Creek Rams.
Members of the F.H. Collins B team – wearing white jerseys – were Kyran Allen, Mareck Boulerice, Sam Christopherson, Sam Finton, Logan Harris (captain), Curtis Perrier, James Russell and Justin Wishart-McDougall.
The majority of the team is Grade 11 students, save for Allen, Harris and Perrier.
Assistant coach Albert Spycher served as head coach of the Warriors B team in Dawson, taking gold for the third straight time – his first time as a coach after two as a player.
Bingham said it was Russell who requested the F.H. teams be split a little more evenly for the Dawson tournament, with hopes of both teams placing in the top three.
The coach obliged, and now the two teams want to stay as is.
“Each of them is keen to prove to the other that they are the A team,” Bingham said. “I think this kind of competition is great to keep both teams motivated with the Yukon championships around the corner.”
Meanwhile, the gold medal-winning junior Warriors teams were coached by Andrew Craigen (boys) and Peter Grundmanis (girls).
The Crusaders senior girls squad secured the second jewel of a potential triple crown by defeating F.H. Collins 2-0 in a hard-fought final.
“All the girls worked hard all weekend, especially since they were in the sights of the other teams since winning Super Volley,” said interim coach Dwayne Stoker.
“For some, this Dawson trip was their last time to represent their schools, and so it always is loud and emotional in the Dawson finals. For our girls, it was extra special because it ended up being the only gold medal that Vanier won this year.”
The golden girls’ roster includes Erica Couch, Lauren Gillies, Skye Hanson, Starr Hanson, Katelyn Holway, Kathleen Limpio, Kate Londero, Brooke Peters, Mikaela Ponsioen and Jiela Tobias.
Regular coach Amanda Bartle was unable to make the trip.
The Super Volley-winning senior boys from Vanier weren’t their dominant selves in Dawson, said coach Ben Craigen.
“Our boys were very hot and cold, placing second in the round robin, and then losing to their rivals from Porter Creek in the semifinals,” Craigen said.
The semifinal match may have been the Crusaders’ worst of the season, with uncontrolled errors and missed serves playing a major factor.
Tournament organizers from Robert Service School were not available for comment this week.
Despite reports of teams from Alaska and Northwest Territories participating this year for the first time, Bingham said that was not the case.
The final championship action of the high school trifecta will take place Nov. 12 to 14, when the Yukon championships are held at Porter Creek Secondary School.
Prior to that, both the Warriors senior and junior boys teams will play in southern B.C. this weekend.
Last year’s Yukon champions were the F.H. Collins senior boys and Porter Creek senior girls, both of whom earned triple crowns with previous wins at Super Volley and Dawson.

That "unidentified team" is Haines Junction's, St. Elias Community School Eagles. There is literally an Eagle on their jerseys.
