The F.H. Collins Warriors and the Porter Creek Rams got the opening night of Superhoops started on Thursday at F.H.

It was all F.H. from start to finish as they secured their first win of the season.

The Warriors began the game using lock-down defence. They got out to the shooters on the perimeter and packed the paint closing down the driving lanes. After a make or a miss, the Warriors picked up the Rams ball handlers right away with a suffocating press.

Warriors player of the game, Meren Bilsky, said the team had to shake off some rust in the early goings.

“A little bit,” said Bilsky. “We haven’t had a practice yet so it was straight out of the tryouts and seeing what we have and seeing what we can work with.”

The lack of chemistry showed early in the first quarter for the Warriors as their passes weren’t crisp and players were not in their proper spots.

“There was a little bit of confusion but mostly we just tried to make it by sprinting and hustling,” said Bilsky.

Where the Warriors saw success in the early portion of the game was when they got out and running on the fast break.

“Transition ball is basically all layups,” said Bilsky.

In order to get out on the break, F.H. used their press to generate turnovers to get the easy opportunities at the basket.

“Ever since we were younger we had coach Chris (Christine Kirk), for a while, and she’s always taught us to press,” said Bilsky. “It’s basically a way to keep us moving, keep us in the game and it confuses the offence a little.”

In the first quarter, the Rams were led on both the defensive and offensive ends by player of the game Paige Stockley.

Stockley got in the passing lanes and drove to the basket for points at the rim. When the defence closed, she found open teammates for open looks.

When the Rams were able to break the F.H. press and play in the halfcourt they generated good shots from the top of the key. The early season rust showed, however, as their shots hit front rim or rattled in and out.

The Warriors built a solid lead heading into halftime and at the start of the third, they doubled down on what they were successful at - pushing the pace.

It didn’t matter the situation, if the Rams hit or missed a shot, the Warriors got out and running.

When Porter Creek stopped the initial fast break opportunity, their defence was still left scrambling and F.H. capitalized getting open looks.

Although down big-time on the scoreboard, the Rams showed that they have no quit in their game.

Porter Creek got good looks at the basket, and if this were midway through the season, they are probably seeing more of those buckets fall.

The Warriors did well to secure the rebounds to limit the Rams to a single possession.

F.H. continued to cruise through the final ten minutes of the game and they got contributions from up and down their lineup.

Emma Boyd grabbed several rebounds and made the quick outlet pass so the Warriors could get out and running.

In halfcourt sets, Sammy Demchuk did well to set up in the corners and make her self open and prepared when her teammates drove the lane and kicked the ball out when the defence collapsed.

The Warriors took the game and Superhoops opener 79-16.
