The F.H. Collins Warriors’ volleyball program continued its dominance at the Grade 8 championships Saturday.

The Warriors added four more medals to their trophy case, with gold and bronze wins in girls action, and silver and bronze in boys.

The Warriors girls beat the Crusaders two straight 25-15, 25-18 at Porter Creek Secondary School Saturday afternoon to clinch gold.

Paige Poelman – who was named MVP – had the game-winning serve, setting off a joyous team celebration on the court.

Warriors coach Barb Hinton was all smiles post-game.

“We were focussed on working together as a team,” she said of her group. “We worked on having a positive attitude. It was not about winning – it was about supporting each other.”

Hinton said that message takes precedence over all else in Grade 8 volleyball. She also lauded her co-coaches Jodi Tuton and Nicole Muir for their contributions to the program.

The Vanier Crusaders won gold in the Grade 8 boys category, 26-24 and 25-9 over F.H. No. 2.

In bronze medal action, F.H. beat out Vanier teams in both the girls and boys games.

The latest medal haul by the Warriors comes after a very successful tournament in Dawson City from both the junior and senior programs.

There, F.H. Collins won three of four available gold medals.

“Things go in waves,” Hinton said of success in high school athletics. “Right now the wave is here. F.H. has really built a good reputation.”

The Yukon championships for junior and senior teams get underway Thursday at Porter Creek Secondary.
