After a long hiatus from competitive play, volleyball action took centre stage at the Canada Games Centre on Saturday evening.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the territory’s volleyball players had been practicing, but they weren’t playing in meaningful games.

Two games were on display Saturday, a boys and a girls match. Instead of the usual game format, best of five sets, the teams got in as many sets as they could within the two-hour time slot they had the gym.

In the first few sets played the rust was evident but as the games progressed and the players found their legs you would not be able to tell that this was the first competitive action played since the pandemic shut everything down.

It was also an opportunity, said Lisa Vowk with Volleyball Yukon, for not just the players to return to action, but also an opportunity for the scorekeepers and referees to get back to the game.
