The AFD Trappers reigned supreme again in Division 1 action during this weekend's opening slo-pitch tournament for divisions 1, 3, and 5.
The AFD Trappers reigned supreme again in Division 1 action during this weekend's opening slo-pitch tournament for divisions 1, 3, and 5.
While there were displays of dominance in divisions 1 and 5, the championship game in division 3 was clearly an upset as the league leaders headed in the final undefeated, but didn't come out that way.
In division one, the Trappers went through the round robin undefeated, but nonetheless required a game winning single in the bottom of the seventh to edge Whitehorse Dental 16-15 for the championship.
Both teams headed into the tournament tied on top of the league standings with five wins and one loss each. The Trappers pushed Dental into the loser's bracket Saturday afternoon with a tight 11-10 win.
Trapper Rob Larose started off the seventh Saturday night with a home run to tie the game 15-15, followed by an out and then a single from Logan Wedge. Pinch runner Kurt Campbell moved to second on a fielders choice.
With two out, Reg Woodford hit a deep single and Campbell used his speed from second base to beat out a play at the plate, for the win.
"We have team chemistry,” Larose said of the strength behind the victory. "And it's our women.”
Larose said this season's addition to the lineup of Neisha Bicudo, Val Boxall and Taylor Doonan has given the Trappers a solid boost.
"When you play co-ed softball, especially A division, all the guys will cancel each other out,” he said. "It is the women that make the difference in the game and our girls were all the difference.
"Those three were a huge pickup.”
Flex Fuel finished third in Division 1, after losing to Whitehorse Dental in the semi-final.
In Division 5 action, Gorgeous Hair, second in league standings, went through the round robin undefeated, having edged the league leading Balls and Dolls 18-15 in Saturday afternoon's semi-final.
Down by three in the bottom of the seventh, Gorgeous Hair scored the first two batters and put the third and fourth hitters on.
With nobody out, Jennifer Hackwell hammered one to left-centre, scoring Alicia Harry from second and sending Cody Sands on his way from first to third, only to be caught up in hot box. But he was released from the squeeze on a throwing error to third, which sent him home for a 21-20 victory.
Crown Royal finished third, after losing 18-16 to Balls and Dolls in the semi-final.
But in Division 3 play, it was the unsung Kustoms Kuts Wild who forced their way up through the losers bracket to face the undefeated and league leading TEC Drywall in the final.
The Wild, however, dominated play from the outset, and finished off TEC with a convincing 21-12 victory to take the opening tournament.
Kustoms Kuts advanced to the final after soundly defeating the Kabota Hoes in the semi-final.
