The medals came fast and furious for Team Yukon in Greenland yesterday.
Yukon hauled in more than 30 ulus in Nuuk, pushing them into second place in the medal standings behind only Alaska.
At press time today, the team was up to 36 ulus won, behind Alaska’s total of 63.
The gold, silver and bronze ulus are small medals shaped in the form of a traditional Arctic knife.
At the 2014 tournament in Fairbanks, Yukon finished fifth in medal standings with 85 total ulus, while Alaska finished first with 202.
Skiers and biathletes picked up the lion’s share of the territory’s early medals Tuesday, which include 12 gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze.
Gold-medal winners were alpine skiers Katie Vowk and Charlie Hawes; Arctic Sports athletes Robyn Poulter and Matt Jacobsen; biathlete Liam Adel (2); cross-country skiers Hannah Deuling, Simon Cash and Derek Deuling; Dene
Games athlete Jedrek Dendys; and snowshoers Breda McIntyre and Jack Amos.
Silver ulu winners include alpine skiers Shane Orban and Vowk; biathletes Dana Sellars, Aidan Hupé, Maria Peters (2) and Bronwyn Goodwin; cross-country skiers Natalie Hynes and Hannah Jirousek; Dene Games athletes Sarina Primozic, Maureen McGinty and Tyler O’Brien; as well as snowboarder Tim Schirmer.
Winning bronze ulus were Arctic Sports athlete Fayne O’Donovan; biathletes Goodwin, Romeo Champagne, Micah Hildes, Daniel Sennett, Marika Kitchen, Bruce Wilson and Aidan Adel; snowboarders Schirmer and Sammy Mather;
and snowshoer Joe Parker.
Inclement weather has continued to hammer both Nuuk and Iqaluit – where the hockey competition is being held – causing delays in some outdoor sport competitions.
Team sports including futsal, hockey, basketball and volleyball are also underway.
The biennial multi-sport tournament will run until March 11. In total, 242 Yukon athletes are competing.
