The Whitehorse Minor Soccer Toonie Tournament, which started Friday evening and went until Sunday, proved to be an exciting weekend of soccer.
In the U-7 final game played Sunday between Northerm and the Whitehorse Elks, the kids pushed the game into overtime with a score of 4-4. When no goal could be decided, the exciting game went into a shootout that took five different players to settle.
Heading into the final minutes of regulation time in the game, held at the Canada Games Centre, the Whitehorse Elks were leading the game 4-2, but just when it looked like the game was decided, Northerm's Ben Kishchuk scored two quick goals to tie the score and force the game into overtime.
Ben scored all four goals in regulation time for Northerm, and Joe Hanson scored the four goals for the Elks.
After five minutes of overtime the game went to a sudden death shootout, with five different players for each team taking a shot at the net.
The final shootout goal was eventually scored by Ben, making the final score 5-4, and becoming his fifth goal of the game.
"I'm proud of each and every one of the Northerm players, all of them worked so hard together as a team through the whole tournament,” said Northerm coach Paul Kishchuk. "They are a wonderful group of kids.”
Northerm took on the Elks Friday night as well, where they tied in the round robin.
The Elks earned another chance to play Northerm in the gold-medal game after a cross-over win in the semifinal match held Saturday morning at Yukon College.
The Toonie Tournament marks the start of Whitehorse Minor Soccer's Christmas break. Regular indoor season play will resume along with school in the new year.
