There were no shortage of runs to kick off the Yukon Fastball League's season opener on Sunday.

The first contest saw an old rivalry renewed between Casa Loma and Roadhouse. It ended in a 14-6 victory for Casa Loma.

Roadhouse didn't have much time to regroup as they were scheduled to retake the field in its second tilt of the evening. The second game was against Cinderwood and the team battled hard to make sure it didn't begin the season at 0-2.

With the score 3-0 by the second inning, Roadhouse chipped in couple more runs in the third.

Jordan Cowman scored the lone run for Cinderwood in the top of the fourth. Cowman was brought home on a hit after he singled to start-off the inning.

However, Roadhouse put the game out of reach in the fifth inning when the team increased its lead to 16-1, which is how it ended.

Two games will be played every Sunday evening up until Aug 9. Game times are 5:45 p.m. for the early start and 7:45 p.m. for the later start.

All games are being played at the Pepsi Softball Centre's Field 2.

Roadhouse and Casa Loma are teams made up of players that historically go to the Discovery Day tournament in Dawson City every year.

Cinderwood is made up primarily of new players to Whitehorse, but with the talent and experience shown during tryouts a couple of weeks ago they could turn out to be the Cinderella team of the year.

The season schedule is based on a double round robin format. Each team has to play a double-header every third week, which puts pressure on all the teams to develop some pitchers to stay strong during the second game.

If this season goes well, plans are to expand the league and offer more games over a longer season in 2010.

Whitehorse was home to a strong six team league in the '90s, but due to a mobile work force and shifting demographics the league lost players and eventually had to fold.

The Yukon Fastball Association is hopeful that families will take the opportunity to come out and watch Sunday evening competition.

All games in the fastball league run either seven innings or for an hour and 15 minutes.

This doesn't include the playoffs, which begin Aug. 2. The playoff format will feature the second place team facing off against the squad that finishes in third.

The winner of that game will go on to face the first place team for a winner take all match up, played on Aug. 9.

There is no time limit for playoffs, which will include the full seven inning game.

The league's schedule for the remainder of June includes:

June 21

Casa Loma vs. Cinderwood; Casa Loma vs. Roadhouse.

June 28

Cinderwood vs. Roadhouse; Cinderwood vs. Casa Loma.
