Team of ‘misfits’ happy with close game against more experienced Yukon Yamaha

A group of slo-pitch players looking to just have some fun in the evening are ecstatic to score their second win of the season.

In Division 4B action at the Pepsi Softball Centre last night, number three team Yukon Yamaha lost a close game to the second-to-last team Twin Peaks Tornadoes 11-9.

“This is just one of those after work blow-off some steam things,” said Tornadoes’ Nancy Oakley.

“We’re just out to have fun and play ball,” agreed Carey House in the third base dug-out after the game.

Their enthusiasm was apparent during the game, with teammates being vocal and one player who made up her own tornado dance to celebrate a catch.

In the first inning the Tornadoes scored six points, while the Yukon Yamaha blanked.

In the top of the second, it was their turn to put some points on the board and they tied it up at six all.

In the third, both teams fought hard and were able to keep the game tied at 8-8.

Finally in the fourth, the Tornadoes scored a break as they put down three points and held off the Yukon Yamaha at zero.

Yukon Yamaha’s one point in the top of the fifth wasn’t enough to catch up and they lost by a close two points.

“We lost by two but it was a really good game,” said Yukon Yamaha’s Jody Meir. “It took us a little while to get into it. The first inning was a little slow, but then we got into our groove.”

Late in the game, Meir had a beautiful slide to second, her first-ever attempt at the move.

“I knew the ball was coming so I had to do it and wow, did it feel good,” she said. “I have a bleeding knee now, but at the moment you don’t notice that type of stuff and I was safe, so that slide did me good.”

In a game that was slowed down by some off pitching, players hit the ball hard and were almost able to knock out a few homeruns.

The Tornadoes outfield also performed well with a few team-work clutch catches.

This is the first year for the newly-formed Tornados.

“We’re a bunch of misfits from other teams that didn’t participate last year,” said Phil Garrick.

“A frankenteam,” added Oakley from down the dug-out bench.

Slo-pitch play continues this weekend with the season’s first tournaments for Division 2 and 3.

The games start Friday at 6:45 p.m. at various diamonds around Whitehorse.
