More than 100 athletes competed in several events at the Yukon badminton championships this past weekend.

Play took place Saturday and Sunday at F.H. Collins Secondary School in Whitehorse. Athletes from almost all schools in Whitehorse, as well as from Haines Junction and Watson Lake, were competing for gold, silver and bronze in their age categories.

Competition was extremely high in all age categories, including a great showing by Rachel Tredger, who played in two age categories and went home with a neck full of medals.

Kaleb Dawe took home gold and silver in his own age division, but also snagged a silver in the Senior category.

Stephan Burdess bumped himself up to the senior division and was able to take home gold in both singles and doubles.

For those unfamiliar with competitive badminton, it is an incredibly fast racquet sport where, in an average game of 20 minutes, you are likely to cover more than 1.5 km in distance and in an advanced competition the bird (shuttlecock) reaches the routine speed of 100 mph.

The highest speed every recorded was 162 mph.

Sponsors for this event included Domino's Pizza, Intersport, Superstore and Canadian Tire.
