It's a tournament that has been around for nearly 15 years, and it seems the Outside world has finally picked up on the unique golf game Yukon has to offer – one that can be played 24 hours a day in summer.

The Air North Midnight Sun Scramble Tournament was held at Mountain View Golf Course on Saturday evening, and teams played well into the night.

The tournament wrapped up around 11 p.m., but head golf pro Jeff Wiggins said some of the 43 tourists that turned up to play headed out on the links again following the awards to play in the middle of the night.

There were 34 teams overall for a total of 132 people. Wiggins said he even had a wait list this year with eight teams who were unable to play because of the influx of people. The tournament was half full by the end of May, something he said has never happened before.

"It is the most popular tournament,” Wiggins said.

The 43 tourists all flew in for the tournament, helping out the local economy, he added.

"We had more guests fly into the territory than in the past,” Wiggins said. In previous years, the highest number of Outside golfers was just about 20 people. "That's good for the economy.”

But all that has changed. It seems golf fans have become aware of the fact that the Yukon can offer midnight golfing.

"That you can't do anywhere else in the world,” Wiggins said. "It's something people are aware of.”

The golf pro said that if the event continues to grow they may have to split it into a two-day event instead of the one day tournament it has been for the past 15 years.

The tournament was played in two divisions, men's open and split.

In the men's division, the first place team was made up of Harry Kulych, Landon Kulych, Ron Kulych and Kaleb Dawe, who shot a 63.

In second place was the team of Brent Philp, Glenn Ford, Arden Meyer and Paul Lackowicz with a score of 65.

In the split division, Sue Stephens, Jim Stephens, Burt Stephens and David Hemmerick scored a 63 as well for first place.

In second was Pat Molloy, Sheila Stockton, Bill MacDonald and Molly MacDonald with a 66.

The first place in the mens division won new Ping and Taylor Made fairway woods, and the first place split team won new golf shoes.

"It was an absolute success,” Wiggins said. After the tournament, the awards ceremony followed. "Everybody just had a blast.”
