Titans winless but popular at national championships

They didn’t win any games, but Yukoners left their mark at the Men’s and Women’s Canadian Slo-pitch Championships in Dorchester, Ont.

In fact, the women’s team drew the attention of the London Free Press. They appeared on the front page of the sports section, right under the story about the smokin’ Toronto Blue Jays.

“We were recognized by someone walking in downtown London, so, like I say, we felt like little celebrities,” said coach Roni-Sue Steinhagen of the Fountain Tire Titans.

Steinhagen said other teams were asking to have their photos taken with the Titans.

A fan, the uncle of one of the players, asked to keep the Titan banner, and had all the players sign it.

“We had such a crowd around our games cheering for us,” she said. “It was just so great.

“Like I said, we felt like little celebrities.”

Steinhagen said while many of the games were lopsided, the Titans did play well overall.

They held Ontario to a score of 9-3 Wednesday night, as Ontario went on to finish the round robin Thursday in first place.

And in their final game of the tournament Thursday night, they were defeated 25-5 by the defending champions, but they scored five, she pointed out.

Steinhagen said they scored two runs in the first.

And when the leadoff batter got on base in the second, short-stop Heidi Harry moved her around and Harry ended up on second, she pointed out.

The coach said once Harry was on, she told the rest of the team their single focus at that point was to get the short-stop home, and they did. Harry slid home.

“We were so glad to get those five runs.”

With the enthusiasm around the Titans, the Whitehorse club was able to snag some good seats for tomorrow’s game between the Blue Jays and New York Yankees.

After all, said Steinhagen, they did share the front sport page with the Blue Jays.

The men’s team, the Urban Realty Reds, were also winless.

The Yukon is hosting next year’s national slo-pitch championships.

I had the privilege of coaching the Titans for the last three years. This season has been amazing. The Nationals was an experience that we'll never forget. At our last game the crowd grew around our last nationals game in Dorchester. They were with us and cheered for every caught ball, every hit, every time one of our players made it on base... The crowd boomed as the Titans crossed home plate a total of 5 times in our last game. When the game was finished the score was 25-5 against last years tournament champions. When we walked off that field we were each greeted with a beer from another ladies team of the tourney, and the crowd closed in and gave us hugs, high fives, and congratulations. We lost that game by 20 runs... But the amazing fans, teams, officials, and organizers made us feel like tournament winners!! The Titans were tired, over heated, and injured going into that game. But they sucked it up and played hard... Each and every player gave it everything they had. They left it there on that field. And everyone knew it.

As I looked around at all of the smiling faces and listened to the laughter around us... I thought.. THOSE ARE MY TITANS!!!
I am so incredibly proud of my ladies.

I am Stacey Bowden's Uncle Randy from London. My wife, Marj and I took in a few game games, and with Stacey's parents, (Bill and Gail Bowden, who drove in from Windsor Ontario for the week) we hosted the ladies and men's team to a bbq and leisure evening at our house. We had a blast!!! Both teams are great ambassadors for the Yukon as we all shared stories and experiences.
Any or all of them are welcome back any time they find themselves in our neck of the woods.
We are now planning a trip to Whitehorse for the 2016 Canadians.

I was at Slo Pitch City in Dorchester, Ontario all this past week watching our men's and women's teams competing for the National Championships.
I had the pleasure of watching both teams from the Yukon compete several times.
Just wanted to say I think it was outstanding of them to be here to compete, and they represented the Yukon in exemplary fashion.
Their sportsmanship was outstanding, and I hope that they all take something back home from their experience.
