All three participating communities had a great showing this past weekend at the Yukon Junior Badminton Championship.

Dawson City, Watson Lake and Whitehorse each took in a number of medals and had more than a few highlights at the three-day event, hosted at Porter Creek Secondary School.

"Our whole club has done well, all of the members that were here," said Cindy Guest, president of Whitehorse Youth Badminton Club. "The majority of them got medals."

Sandeep Sharma, assistant coach for the Whitehorse Youth Badminton Club, was also impressed, adding it's always beneficial to having the rural communities attend.

"Watson Lake is a very good example, where they don't have that many players, but they have ample court space and they are able to train much more effectively."

Randy Carlson, the head coach of Watson Lake's team, said the skill level of players throughout the Yukon has improved in recent years.

"Obviously the level of play of badminton is definitely improving over the last couple of years as proven by our results outside the territory."

The Yukon's success at Outside competitions include two gold medals at the 2008 Arctic Winter Games, won by Vanessa Carlson in singles. Carlson also won a gold medal with fellow Watson Lake player Abbie Rotondi in the girls doubles draw.
