Soccer truly is the world's game, and in Whitehorse this past weekend, is was represented well with players from 13 different countries in town for the Whitehorse Invitational 35-and-over Men's Indoor Soccer Tournament.

The tournament ran from Friday until Sunday at the Canada Games Centre and ended with two out of the four Whitehorse teams participating in the final matches.

In the final match Sunday, the Barber Shoppe Blue Beards took on the Real Foods Green Giants.

The Giants, captained by Brad Martin, were victorious over the Beards 3-1.

But the Beards, captained by Victor Lavanderos, did not go home empty handed, snagging the Golden Boot award for most goals after scoring a tournament-high 11 in five games.

The action started with Phil Jackson scoring two goals for the Giants, followed by Adil Khalik adding the third.

Simon Pulido scored the lone goal for the Beards.

The visiting Juneau team defeated Whitehorse's Arctic Reds who were captained by Justin Carre to steal the third-place finish, and upset a potential all-Whitehorse top-three.

Juneau were last year's winners, and headed into the tournament hoping to keep their title.

The fourth local team, the Whitehorse Sun Dogs captained by Jake Hanson, placed fifth.

The tournament consisted of a round-robin on Friday evening that picked up again Saturday morning.

"The Whitehorse teams were drafted evenly and the games throughout the tournament were close and exciting for both the fans and players,” said Terry Markley, one of the organizers of the tournament.

Players attending the tournament were from all over the world, including Iran, Iraq, England, Fiji, Guatemala, Mexico, Chile, India, China, U.S.A., Vietnam, Moldova, Kosovo and of course Canada.
