Eleven young Francophones will proudly represent the Yukon at the 5th Canadian Francophone Games (CFG) taking place in Grand Sudbury, Ont., from July 20-24.
The Yukoners will show their talent and distinguish themselves among 1,000 other young Francophones through sports and artistic events.
"The Jeax de la francophonie canadienne (JFC – CFG) are a unique opportunity for French-speaking youth across Canada to discover the richness and diversity of Canada's Francophonie and to forge new friendships,” Yukon's chef de mission Roch Nadon said.
In addition to representing the territory in four disciplines – badminton, athletics, music and visual arts – the Yukon participants will have the chance to rub shoulders with renowned artists such as Isabelle Boulay, Zachary Richard and Karkwa during the shows, which are open to the general public.
The territory will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Yukoner William Kennedy, who at the last Francophone Games, held in Edmonton in 2008, won a silver medal in the 3,000-metre race.
The CFG are among the largest gatherings of Canada's French speaking youth.
In addition to encouraging hundreds of young people to exercise their talents in one of three sectors (arts, leadership and sports), the Games showcase cultural pride-, self-confidence and leadership abilities in a friendly, competitive setting.
The CFG are a French Canadian Youth Federation (FJCF) initiative, supported financially by Canadian Heritage.
The Association franco-yukonnaise is the official voice of about 3,550 Yukon Francophones, 1,250 of whom have French as their mother tongue.
A non-profit organization, AFY aims to improve the quality of life of Yukon Francophones.
