The 2019 Mis-Adventure Run, a 21-kilometre race, will be taking place this Sunday beginning and ending at the Mount Lorne Fire Department at 0.2 on Robinson Subdivision Road.

The Mis-Adventure Run has been held for over 15 years and was founded by Bill Dunn and Sue Mackinnon. The run originally was not held by the Mount Lorne Volunteer Fire Department but they did play their part since the beginning.

Now the race has become a fundraiser for the Mount Lorne Volunteer Fire Department and has been growing ever since.

The money raised helps the fire department pay for insurance as well as extra things like gloves.

The run provides most of the funding for the Firehall.

Judy Beaumont has been involved with the race since 2006 and now helps organize the event and hopes that this year will see a good turnout.

“We had 48 people last year, 24 in 2017, then 43 in 2016,” said Beaumont. “It really depends on the weather. It is just a fun time and I am always impressed that people come back year after year. So hopefully we get at least 40 people again this year.”

Beaumont also said the run gets some tourists and recalls an RV parked at the Firehall on the day of a race because a father and son heard about it and wanted to participate.

During the races early years it began at the Mount Lorne Community Centre but a wedding one year caused the switch to the Firehall.

The racers will still pass by the community centre as well as crossing Bear Creek and the golf course.

“It is over some rough land,” said Beaumont. “People are encouraged to bring their dogs and bring bear spray.”

About five years ago a five-kilometre race was added to make it even more of a family event.

The Mis-Adventure Run is always held two weeks before the Yukon River Trail Marathon and Relay.

“The serious runners are up in Dawson for the Dome Race,” said Beaumont. “But the runners really like it. It helps get their bodies in gear for the Yukon River Trail Marathon and Relay.”

There are no prizes for the winners of the race, except for some bragging rights, and all will be invited for a chili lunch afterward.
