Funds continue to be raised in memory of Terry Fox.

Porter Creek Secondary School is reporting $1,000 was raised through their run Sept. 26.

The community really stepped up to the plate and donated items to sell to raise money for the run, said communications teacher Trena Irving.

“As part of our curriculum, we wrote business letters to Superstore, Extra Foods, Pizza Hut, Dominoes Pizza and G-P Distributing,” she said.

“We asked them for food and drink donations and they generously gave. As a result, we have made just over $900 and we still have some juice to sell, so the final tally will be $1,000.”

Students and staff ran and walked a five-km loop as part of the event.

This year, Porter Creek has a new principal, Souhail Soujah, and he also ran the loop.

“I am especially proud of my students for doing the letters and posters to advertise this event,” said Irving.

“I am very pleased with the students and staff at the school showing their support by giving money for the cancer foundation.

“In the past, we have not been so successful with donations of money but selling lunch was the big hit. In high school, donations are not as large as in elementary schools, at least not here in Whitehorse. Porter Creek is very proud of the community effort to make this happen.”

Terry’s older brother, Fred, met the students last week. Fox visited nine schools during his first tour of the Yukon.

“Terry would be so happy, proud and surprised to know that schools from the Yukon continued what he started in 1980,” Fox told students at Ecole Whitehorse Elementary last week.

Meanwhile, Donna White, B.C.-Yukon’s provincial director of the Terry Fox Foundation, said a final Yukon tally has not yet been totalled.

Schools don’t report their fund-raising totals by phone, White said.
