Toronto wasn’t the only place with highlight, all-star basketball on the weekend. There was some highflying action last night in the Yukon Men’s Basketball League.
Game one had the battle of the .500 Both the Monstars and The Average Joes were coming into this game with a seven-and seven record.
It was the Monstars that got off to an early lead with a 10-0 run capped off by a big put back dunk by Jeremy McCoullgah. The Monstars Continued to roll on hot outside shooting from Karl Gurber and Matt Thomson.
It was the big inside play and game high 22 points for Matthew Johnson that keep the Average Joes in the game. The Monstars took the game 68-55 and improved their record to 8-7 with the Average Joes now sitting at 7-8.
Game two had the 3-10 Caulkers taking on the 8-6 Bulls.
Last night the Caulkers, without starting guard Chad Cerlew and Dave Stehilen, were no match for the red hot Bulls. A valiant start from the Caulkers stars Jon Buckle and Dave Thexton kept the game close, but a late first half 17-3 run by the Bulls spearheaded by newcomer Christian Coldea secured the 69-37 win for the Bulls.
Game three had the first place 10-4 Willey Bears taking on 6-7 Tenacious D. Tenacious D got out to an early 9-2 lead, but with a strategic time out and adjustment, the Willey Bears showed why they are number one, taking advantage of mismatches and moving the ball and get to the charity stripe.
Tenacious D was able to hang around, only trailing by one at the half. It was a game of chess in the second half with both teams playing to their strengths and taking advantage of the opponent’s weaknesses. However it was a late bucket with four seconds remaining that put Tenacious D over the top with a 75-74 win, knocking off the number one seed.
