Ted Stephens has made Yukon history by breaking out of the QMJHL with a win over the Saint John Sea Dogs this week to earn a spot in the coveted Master Card Memorial Cup tournament.

Stephens and his team the Moncton Wildcats battered the Sea Dogs with a 7-4 victory to earn the Presidents Cup and a trip to Brandon, Man. on Monday evening.

They earned the QMJHL title by winning the final series 4-2.

Stephens could not be reached for comment, as the team is en route to Brandon for the tournament.

The achievement marks the first time a born-and-raised Yukoner has made it to the Memorial Cup. Stephens is also the only Yukon player to make it into the QMJHL.

The only previous Yukon resident to make it into the tournament was Jarrett Deuling, who in 1992 and 1994 hoisted the trophy with the Kamloops Blazers. Deuling, originally from Vernon, B.C. was with the team from 1991 to 1994.

Stephens will be the first Yukoner in nearly two decades to head to the Memorial Cup tournament.

For the Wildcats, tournament play kicks off against the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Attending the tournament along with the Wildcats will be WHL champions the Calgary Hitmen, host team the Brandon Wheat Kings and the OHL champion Windsor Spitfires.
