Teams jockey for position as rec playoffs near

The TA Firth Rangers hope its recent Rendezvous title victory sparks the club for a long playoff run.

The club is currently three points out of first place in the local rec hockey league’s A division standings, behind the perennial powerhouse Air North Jets (22-9-3).

ORC (19-10-5) rests in third, just one point back of TA Firth (20-10-4).

Playoff action is expected to get underway March 10, with champions crowned by month’s end.

Gold Pan/Cinderwood Avalanche sniper Mike Arnold appears to have the league scoring title under wraps, with a whopping 75 goals and 86 assists in 35 games – good for 161 points.

In B division action, the CRB Nighthawks have a firm grasp on first place with a 27-5-2 record – seven points up on Goody’s Gas (23-7-3).

As usual, Boston Pizza-Trinity Tech sniper Tyler Murray leads the league in scoring, recently cracking the century mark with 60 goals and 40 assists in 36 games.

Nighthawks star Tyrell Hope is second in league scoring with 41 goals and 39 assists in 33 games.

Playoffs will get underway next week with teams split into three divisions. Each grouping will feature a triple-knockout format.

The local women’s hockey league is in the throes of its playoff schedule, with a league champion slated to be crowned this Saturday night.

Still in the running for the Whitehorse Women’s Hockey Association title are Hvactech Systems (blue), H&R Block (green), Jill Pollack Co. (white) and Burnt Toast (black).

In the Whitehorse Old-Timer Hockey League, EDI is running away with the season standings with a current record of 28-4-5.

Greg Charlie is at the forefront of EDI’s charge, with a league-best 45 goals and 33 assists – a solid 78 points.

Tim Hortons is securely in second at 23-7-7, thanks in part to Walt Liley’s 29 goals and 38 assists – second only to Charlie in league scoring.

Following a tournament this weekend, old-timer playoffs will begin March 20 with the finals occurring some time in April.

Finally, in the alternative Canyon City Hockey League, the Rapid Fire Roofing Raiders continue to hold down top spot in the five-team league with a 17-10-6 record.

The Sun Life Sundogs (15-13-5) are in second, followed by the Dirty Northern Muckers (14-14-5) in third.
