The 2020 Arctic Winter Games are nine days away. The teams for the 21 sports have been finalized and now everyone who will be representing the territory is going to look the part.

A fashion show was held on Thursday at Sport Yukon to unveil the uniform all Yukon athletes will don during the Games - these are not the uniforms the athletes will be competing in.

Tracey Bilsky, the executive director of Sport Yukon, helped in the design of the gear and introduced the athletes who were rocking the new Yukon threads.

Athletes will receive a bright-red, with cammo undertones, winter jacket; A sleek purple t-shirt with Team Yukon across the chest.

Bilsky said purple is one of the main colours of Team Yukon, along with black, red and white. As well, she said she enjoys throwing in something retro in the designs and the shirts reflect that.

To go along with the purple tee, athletes also will get a long-sleeve shirt.

The shirt is mainly black, with one of the shoulders and arms red.

Provided by Roots, athletes will receive great sweatpants. To wear over the sweats when outside are charcoal snow pants.

To keep their ears warm, Yukon athletes will rock a grey toque with a fur pompom on top. This year the Fur School acquired black wolf pelts from the traditional territory of Na-cho Nyak Dun First Nation.

Most of the pompoms were made by community organizations from Mayo. These included groups from J.V. Clarke School, Na-cho Nyak Dun First Nation sewing group and Daycare, and community sport groups. Modelling the red outer jacket and ski pants was archer Emmett Kapaniuk.

“I personally really like them,” said Kapaniuk. “I like the red design and the cammo on them. We are going to definitely stand out compared to some of the other territories I think.”

Bilsky said the Yukon is known for having head-turning gear. Kapaniuk got to wear the Yukon uniforms at the 2019 Canada Winter Games. He said he prefers the AWG uniforms because they fit his own style.

“I find these much better, they are more poppy and stuff,” said Kapaniuk. “I usually have flashy stuff so I really enjoy it.”

With the Games around the corner, Kapaniuk said he is starting to feel excited and believes the archery team is going to have a good showing.

Rodel Gaba, a cultural participant, Gabrielle Perreault a dog musher and Maren Bilsky, a basketball player, all said they were happy with the designs.

“I think they are pretty cool,” said Gaba. “I’ve never seen the purple on the Team Yukon’s t-shirts before. They are pretty nice.”

“I really like the long-sleeve shirt,” said Perreault. “It’s super comfortable.”

“So far, the sweats and the fleece are my favourite,” said Maren. “I know those are probably what I’m going to wear the most when they end.”

The three agreed that typically Team Yukon has some of the best gear.

“We have some pretty cool colours compared to some other teams,” said Maren.

“That’s true,” added Perreault.

“I know when it comes to Westerns and Canada Summer Games there’s some teams that are stuck with bright yellow, black, blue and white, we have some good colours to work with,” said Maren.

Trading jackets and other gear with contingents is a part of the Games.

“I might trade my outer jacket because red and me don’t always go well together,” said Perreault. “I will probably keep the rest because I really like it.”

“I’m probably going to spend a week evaluating everyone else’s uniforms and then pick a couple of things that I like and trade them off,” said Maren. “We’ll see.”

“I’m going to keep the warmer stuff but trade off the others for some other country’s gear,” said Gaba.
