CELEBRATION HELD – The competitions and opening ceremonies of the 2020 Arctic Winter Games would have begun Sunday had the Games not been cancelled on March 7. A parade and street party was held Sunday, with permission from the chief medical officer, to celebrate the hard work of Team Yukon’s athletes, volunteers and officials. In their Games jackets, Team Yukon marched from the SS Klondike to the Elijah Smith Building.

Fear mongering-move on on Mar 17, 2020 at 6:07 pm

The virus is most susceptible to spreading in enclosed places, like airplanes, at work, at school, bars, gyms. Outside is safer than inside in terms of the virus spreading and being able to stay away from others. Some of the people who are being critical about this last outside gathering have been traveling abroad (even to Europe--utter stupidity!) and are the ones we need to stay away from! Not saying that fear is unjustified but the parade is done, many enjoyed it, move on! And if there's cases of Corona linked to this parade, then you can say 'I told you so.' I'm more worried going down to grocery shop today and NO PRECAUTIONS are in effect inside the grocery stores. No health checks, hand sanitizer, monitoring....nothing. That's what you should be worried about, not this outdoor gathering. Lay off of Dr. Hanley-everybody is doing the best they can with the info they have.

Wise move? on Mar 16, 2020 at 3:51 pm

Not sure if it was a responsible decision or not. But social distance was not on anyone’s mind there. I realize a lot of the athletes and volunteers were saddened by the cancellation. But I’ve got a news flash for you all. We are all going to be saddened and suffering from isolation long before this is over. Just because we have no reported cases, does not mean it is not here. Lots of people only have minor symptoms so it could be spreading already. I think Dr. Hanley made this decision with emotion rather than science. But I hope he is right.
