The Canada 55+ Games are underway in Saint John, N.B. and so is Team Yukon’s medal count.

Runner Brenda Dion won gold Tuesday in the five-kilometre event and teammate Donna Jones was right behind her with a silver.

Co-chef de mission Marg White said the Yukon contingent of 11 cyclists won a bunch of medals this morning but exact results were not available by press time.

Track and field began today and the lawn bowlers were caught in an early morning downpour.

The hot weather than gripped the East Coast over the last few weeks seems to have subsided but the bocci players still got a bit of it yesterday out in the open field where they play.

White said the pickle ball team is also faring well with a couple of wins so far.

The 138 members of Team Yukon represent the largest contingent the territory has ever sent to the senior games. Accompanying them are about 25 cheerleaders.

Team Yukon has competitors in 17 of the 22 events.

The Games got underway Tuesday morning with the opening ceremonies at which 93-year-old Betty Hebert of Whitehorse was recognized as the oldest female participating.

She’s competing in cribbage.

The average age of Team Yukon is 68, and 11 team members are over the age of 80.
