Those itching to get back into organized table tennis over the summer will have their shot this weekend.

The Whitehorse Table Tennis Club will hold its opens on Sunday, Sept. 12, from 1:30 - 4 p.m. at Whitehorse Elementary School (back entrance).

Coach Kevin Murphy said the club will have two focuses heading into the upcoming season.

One focus will be working toward the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax; the other is gaining interest in the sport.

The under-18 team heading to Nova Scotia has room for three boys and three girls.

"We have a good, strong selection of guys, but the girls' pool is wide open,” Murphy said, adding that the club is even looking for girls who have experience with other racket sports.

Interest in the sport goes through cycles, he added.

"It's like that with a lot of sports, you're always going back to the grassroots,” he said.

Last year the club put on a demonstration at Porter Creek Secondary School which roused interest, and the club is looking to do something similar this upcoming season.

But Murphy noted that the sport is not devoted simply to the grassroots level in Whitehorse.

There are opportunities for adults to play as well.

"It is one of those really dynamic sport,” he said. "The equipment changes are phenomenal.”
