Fuelled by a Ryan Gleason hat trick, the TA Firth Rangers took home the coveted Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Cup on Sunday.

The Whitehorse team jumped out to a huge 5-0 first-period lead over the Selkirk Bears in Sunday’s A division final, including three goals from Gleason and a last-second dagger from captain Clayton Thomas with less than one second on the clock.

Clint Teichroeb added a first-period marker, his first of two goals in a 6-1 victory.

“Everything was clicking,” said Gleason post-game. “We started rolling right off the bat. We came out pretty quick and I don’t think they knew what hit them.”

Gleason’s second goal came on a quick shot from the slot while shorthanded.

His third goal was scored from behind the net.

“Sometimes it just goes that way,” said the burly winger.

“Other days, you’re fighting the puck, but the puck just seemed to keep sticking to my stick. It comes and goes, and today it came.”

The Rangers downed Yukon Brewing 4-1, then tied the U16 Yukon Mustangs 2-2, before beating the same Mustangs team 2-0 in the semifinal.

For their victory, the Rangers took home a $1,100 prize.

“It’s fun,” Gleason said of the victory. “These are a great bunch of guys and playing with them the last couple of years has just been a blast.”

Gleason admitted the Rangers had stumbled of late in rec league action, but their usual winning ways returned just in time for the tournament.

“We’re a lunch-pail crew,” he said. “It was fun to win it with these guys.”

Selkirk’s Morris Morrison ended Matt King’s shutout bid with a goal late in the second period.

The Bears ousted the 2015 tournament champion Air North Jets 4-2 in the semifinal thanks to an outstanding performance from goalie Daniel Naef.

Last year, Air North beat Selkirk 6-2 in the A final.

“The boys thought they had already won,” said Bears assistant captain Jeremy Harper on his team’s lacklustre performance in the final. “Honestly, beating Air North, they figured they already had it in the bag and didn’t come to play in the first period.

“We stopped the cross-crease pass,” Harper said of the Bears’ semifinal win. “That’s their go-to goal.”

The Bears roster included seven players from Pelly Crossing.

The annual Rendezvous hockey tournament featured three divisions with games beginning Friday morning and concluding Sunday afternoon.

Six teams participated in the A division tournament.

Nighthawks dump North Stars 5-1 to win B side

Kevin Johnstone scored two first-period goals, and his second stood up to be the winner as the CRB Nighthawks downed the KDFN North Stars 5-1 to win the Rendezvous B division championship.

Mike Skookum, George Skookum and Glenn Skookum added singles for the Nighthawks in the win, while goalie Breyin Wiens allowed just a single to Garron Kuster of the North Stars.

The Nighthawks went undefeated in the mini-tournament, beating the Fountain Tire Rubbers 4-1, the Trans North Helicopters 6-1 and the North Stars 9-1, before dropping the Cinderwood Avalanche in the semifinals.

In total, 10 teams skated in the B division, which featured two pools.

For their victory, the Nighthawks earned $500.

Lead Dawgs shut out AWG girls 5-0 in final

Katie Vanderstelt potted a hat trick and goaltender Abbie Turner recorded a shutout as the Lead Dawgs trounced the Yukon Arctic Winter Games team 5-0 in the women’s Rendezvous final.

Vanderstelt added an assist on Sue Hamilton’s second period goal to give her four points in the game.

Tamara Greek also scored for the Lead Dawgs, who coasted through the four-team tournament to earn a $500 cash prize.

They beat the Sourdough Rink Beauts 7-1, Arctic Winter Games girls 6-0 and Gold Rush 8-1 en route to the championship game.

Vanderstelt recently won the league scoring title in the Whitehorse Women’s Hockey Association, scoring 37 goals and 22 assists in 30 games.
