Saturday provided a nice stamp on the season for many Whitehorse Glacier Bears, who competed at this year's Yukon Invitational Swim Meet.

The club dominated the championship's attendance and had 110 of its approximate 120 swimmers take part.

The two-day meet ends the season for some of the club's younger swimmers, while for others there are several meets to look forward to.

These meets include a AA competition in Vancouver in June, AAA's in Victoria in early July, Senior Nationals, Age Group Nationals, and finally the Canada Summer Games.

On Sunday, Swim Yukon announced its Summer Games team, which the organization's president Ron Sumanik said will be the most talented group the territory has ever sent.

"We're extremely proud of the efforts all of our candidates," he said. "We really expect to make history at these games."

The Canada Summer Games are being held in P.E.I. the last two weeks of August.

The Yukon has never won a medal in swimming at the Canada Summer Games, Sumanik said.

This year's team will be led by Alexandra Gabor, one of the territory's top swimmers. Gabor, along with Glacier Bears teammate Bronwyn Pasloski were selected to the Canadian National Junior Team for the 2009 Australian Age Group Championships, held in Sydney, Australia back in April.

In Sydney, Gabor won Canada's first gold medal in the 15 year old age category for the 100m Free (15-17 Girls). Her gold medal time broke a B.C. record lowering it by seven one-hundredths in prelims, before dropping it again by a half of a second. Gabor's time was 56:52.

Unfortunately for the Yukon, Pasloski was ineligible Canada Summer Games' team selections as a result of achieving a national carding status earlier this season.

The Yukon has only had two carded swimmers, which includes Pasloski and MacKenzie Downing, currently a member of the University of Victoria Swim Team.

Sumanik said the territory could have sent a maximum of 24 swimmers to the Canada Summer Games, however Swim Yukon limited the team to 15. He added the organization didn't see it as a mass participation event and wanted the swimmers that made the final selection to be compete on the national stage.

Other swimmers selected to the team include Felix Bouchard, Geofroi Bourcier, Tanner Cassidy, Brice Harding, Joshua Kelly, Spencer Sumanik, Jason Zrum, Kirsten Berube, Hayley Bielz, Taylor Campbell, Julia Fedoriak, Kate McArthur, Erin Oliver-Beebe and Molly Purser.

Awards handed out at this past weekend's Yukon Invitational Swim Meet included Gabor and Pasloski being named swimmers of the year, while Hayley Bielz took home the leadership award.

Nicole Wawryk was named Rookie of the Year, while winners of the 2009 Ryan Downing trophy for most improved 200 Individual Medley this season included Erin McArthur and Kevin Salesse.

It was a good meet for the Whitehorse Glacier Bears, said head coach Marek Poplawski.

"I think it is a good way to finish the season for the younger kids to really see what swimming is about then get hungry for next season," he said. "That was accomplished.

"There were so many good swims from different age groups. It was a very valuable experience for everybody and they learned something."

Seven swimmers from Fairbanks and one swimmer from Juneau made the trip for the Yukon championships.

The top Whitehorse Glacier Bear swimmer in the eight and under category was Cassis Lindsay, who finished in second with 56 points.

The Glacier Bears swept the eight and under boy's category, thanks to Liam Mather, Matthew Blakesley and Luke Bakica.

Mather finished in first with 68 points, while Blakesley took second and Bakica rounded out the top three.

The Yukon swim championships was a particular special meet for 12-year-old Whitehorse Glacier Bear Haley Braga.

Braga not only placed second overall in the girl's 11-12 category, but also achieved two AAA times in both the 100-m and 200-m fly.

"I wasn't expecting to get the 200 and 100 fly," she said. "I'm normally good at the free that's mainly my event. That made me quite happy."

She said it was the first time she has ever achieved a AAA swim time.

This season, Braga helped coach the Teddy Bears group every Sunday and was impressed with how they did at the Yukon Invitational.

"They were really good and they had lots of fun too," she said. "No one missed a race, so it was good."

Whitehorse Glacier Bear's president Pat Duncan said the Yukon Invitationals is a big meet for the club.

"The oldest of the swimmers will go out to meets like the Christmas Cracker in Victoria and the Keyano Swim meet in Edmonton, but the Teddy Bears and the nine, 10 year olds don't always go out to those meets, so this is a major event for them," she said.
