It was a closely fought battle between the Mountainview Golf League's two division winners on Thursday in the championship final.
In a thrilling finish, Super A managed to edge Total Trac Yukon 3-2, needing an extra playoff hole and a clutch putt drained by Leif Lassen to win the coveted Feature Food's trophy.
This was Super A's second year in the commercial golf league and its first time winning the championship.
"It's incredible, it was a lot of fun all year long," said Scott McCarthy, owner and player of Super A.
"Everyone that's involved in this commercial league's a lot of fun to play with. This whole year it's all about having a good time, getting out and playing golf. We are not the best golfers, but I bet we had the most fun. Especially today and to go the extra hole, that kind of adds a little bit of drama with the whole thing."
The Mountainview commercial league was established after the course was built more than 15 years ago. The league has never been short of teams, which this year included 30.
There haven't been too many major changes since the beginning, but one of the major differences in the 2008 season was the fact that the teams were divided into two divisions of competition.
The first was the Nicklaus division, which Super A won , while Total Trac Yukon was second to none in the Palmer division.
League play began early on in May and included 18 weeks of competition, rain or shine, every Thursday night.
One of the exciting things about the Mountainview is how it changes up the playing format for each week of competition. Some of the different games include awarding a winner after taking the total strokes, minus a player's handicap. Another game includes playing hole by hole with the winner finishing with the best total score.
There is also a two-person team play that features a head to head match up against two opponents on another golf squad.
Thursday's league wrap featured a popular playing choice called the scramble.
The scramble format includes all of the teams starting at the same time on a different hole. It includes taking the best shot recorded on a team, which continues until the conclusion of a specific hole. Individual teams could win a maximum of eight points in one night of competition.
Although the other 28 teams were eliminated from the championship final, all 30 squads were in action Thursday night.
Besides the Features Foods Commercial Golf League Trophy, four other trophies were given out, which included the two division winners as well as a the league's second place finishers. Super A defeated Missing Links in the previous week's playoff competition , while Total Trac Yukon eliminated Pour Rite Construction.
The top two teams in both divisions qualified for the playoffs with the first in one playing the second ranked squad in the other.
Total Trac Yukon won a very competitive Palmer division, finishing with a very impressive 89 points. Super A took top spot in the Nicklaus division, finishing with 75 points.
McCarthy, who has been golfing for 15 years, said Total Trac Yukon proved why they took their division.
"They sure showed why they were on top of their division," he said. "It just happened to be the day that we played a little bit better."
He said winning the commercial league is up there on his list of accomplishments in the sport.
"It's kind of a nice feeling that next year when we come back we will be the defending champs," McCarthy said. "We just come out for a good time and that's kind of what the whole game is about."
Other players on Super A included Chris Richards, Leif Lassen and Mike Sheppard.
Jim Pollock, statistician for the commercial golf league, said that possible changes for next year could include having an A and B division, adding this would make the team match ups a little more balanced.
He said he hopes to increase the number of teams to 32, which would be only four teams shorter than the highest total in league history.
Pollock said he was pleased with how the season went this year.
"We had 30 (teams) and good turnout," he said. "It's relaxed and easy going and everybody has a good time and that's basically what we are after."
