Crispin Studer set a pace his rivals could not keep up to, then went on to win the 2015 Silver Sled sled dog race last weekend.

The 34-year-old and his team of 10 dogs were the first to cross the finish line in Haines Junction Sunday, earning the Carcross musher a $1,000 paycheque and seven bags of dog food.

Studer finished the 100-mile race – which sees mushers complete an out-and-back from Haines Junction to Silver City in two stages – in six hours, 42 minutes.

Hans Gatt and William Kleedehn tied for second place in seven hours, three minutes, while Susie Rogan finished fourth and Gerry Willomitzer and Jade Netzer tied for fifth.

The first five to finish the 100-mile race were all Yukon Quest veterans.

“I started in the middle of the back but then I passed everybody so I knew I had it under control,” Studer said.

The race saw 22 mushers take part. All competitors overnighted Saturday at a research station in Silver City on the shores of Kluane Lake.

“Everybody slept in beds and cabins,” said Studer. “It was very comfortable. I’ve never seen mushers laugh so much.”

A message from organizers on the race website noted next year’s race will be timed to the second, rather than the minute, to avoid ties.

A 31-mile skijor race was also held as part of the weekend festivities.

Katherine Sheepway took home that victory with a total race time of four hours, 57 minutes.

It was actually a 62 mile skijor race, 31 miles out, 31 miles back.
