The second of a series of three Yukon Schools Mountain Bike Races were held Tuesday on the trails just past the Schwatka Lake Day Use Area.
The first race was held at Porter Creek Secondary School on September 17. The fall mountain bike races follow the same criteria as the ones held in the spring by Trena Irving, the coach of U Kon Echelon.
That series saw between 20-23 riders but the first series saw 41 riders including eight girls.
“It was extremely nice to see such a great turnout and we will plan accordingly for this weeks race! Stoked!” wrote Irving in an email. (It) was so great to see all the females out. It is harder to get girls out racing so having eight out of the 41 riders was great.”
The group was ten smaller at 31 including four girls. All the students waited enthusiastically for their race to start.
The kids were grouped according to age and ability, so they either did one, two, or three laps of the trail, while accompanied by some teachers and other volunteers.
Veronica Parker was the quickest female to do the three laps, finishing in 14 minutes and 53 seconds. Ava Staley was close behind coming in a mere three seconds behind. Tori Vollmer came third in 15:06.
Noah Marnik was first out of the 11 male riders doing the three laps.
He returned in 15 minutes even. Three seconds behind Marnik was Jonah McConnell and Isaac Meagher rounded out the top three.
Competing in a class of her own, Mattee Marchand bettered her time from the first week and did her two laps in 13:31 on Tuesday.
The two-lap boys’ category had the most riders at 13. Johna Staley proved the fastest finishing in 10 minutes, 22 seconds. Keiran Horton followed four ticks of the clock after and Henry Conners placed third.
Connor Israel did his one lap in 8:01. Jude Norton and Charles Snider came second and third respectively. There were no girls competing in the one-lap race in on Tuesday.
