The future of Yukon squash is looking good, based on the play of the youth in Saturday's junior tournament.

This past weekend, the Better Bodies Cross Training Centre hosted its annual junior tournament, which featured 20 junior players.

In a battle for 'A' division bragging rights, Stephen Grundmanis outlasted squash rival Kai Knorr in a thrilling five-game marathon.

Knorr battled back after trailing 14-10 in the fourth game to force a fifth and deciding game.

"He just dug his heel in there and ended up winning that game," said squash pro Marie Desmarais. "For Kai the fact that he won that fourth game after having been down four match balls; that's pretty gutsy."

Grundmanis also showed he was capable of coming from behind and managed to overcome a 7-2 deficit to take the match.

The Open 'B' division final pitted Coleman Newell against Logan Harris. Newell won three close games to take the match by a score of (15-10, 15-13, 15-12).

"Coleman is fairly new to the game," said Desmarais. "Realistically he has just been playing for a year and he's improved a lot this year. He's very coachable, him and Will Parker, who finished third (in the 'B' division) They have been taking semi-private lessons together pretty well all year and they have just really improved this year."

The 'B' division was made up with the most players (14 in total).

Parker defeated Benjamin Grundmanis (15-12, 15-12, 8-15, 15-9) in the third place match.

Graydon McDonnell won in five games against Kelly Panchyshyn for the consolation 'B' final (13-15, 17-15, 13-15, 15-13, 17-15).

Megan Timmons finished on top of the girl's novice division, winning all three of her round robin matches. Katrina Dobush placed second in the novice category.

Other upcoming squash events include two summer camps for beginners. The camps will be held the week of June 15 and June 22.

The two camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and have limited space.
