There were spills and thrills at Wednesday afternoon's Yukon High School Mountain Bike Race Series number three.
With only one race left in the short month long season, the top spots are still within reach for most of the five different categories.
This week's course was up the Chadburn Lake Rd. It weaved around trees with big dips and roots to give the students a little air time.
The races, which suffered low numbers at the first race seem to have picked up in popularity, said Manon Aubert, a teacher from Ecole Emilie Tremblay who has helped out at all three races so far.
To date, 37 students have tackled the tough three courses, with a steady number of about 30 showing up on Wednesday.
"We've got good numbers,” said Aubert.
The course was a bit more steep than the students were used to this week, with at least one student hitting the dirt after taking a corner too fast.
"If you're not used to steep hills it would be pretty hard,” said racer Logan Godin. The student said one hill in particular on the course caused a few problems, but nothing he couldn't handle.
"It was pretty awesome,” he said. Godin plans to be back for next week's final race on Wednesday.
The final race is being held at the start of Chadburn Lake Rd., and is hosted by Vanier secondary School. There will be a barbecue and awards ceremony to follow the races, where some great prizes will be given out to the top students in each category.
Many of the top runners are only a few points ahead of the second place racers, leaving next week's Wednesday afternoon race potentially open.
As of this week, the top runners are: Aiden Allen from Ecole Emilie Tremblay with 28 points in the Grade 8 category who ranked first and then second in the last two races; E.E.T's Simon Geoffroy who placed second in the first race has dominated the Grade 9/10 category since taking first at the last two races is ahead with 29 points; Adrianna Anttila from F.H. Collins is first for the Open Girl category but is only one point ahead of second place racer Sara Burke-Forsyth also of F.H.C with 28 points; the Grade 11/12 category is topped by Porter Creek Secondary School's Jason Zrum with 19 points, who after not attending the first race took first place and then second, and Alidas Jamnicky from F.H. C. has won all three races in the BMX category to give him 30 points.
