The Squash Yukon League came down to a high voltage final on Tuesday at Better Bodies.
The Squash Yukon League came down to a high voltage final on Tuesday at Better Bodies. The regular season champions, The Electrical Shop Ltd., who racked up 434 points, battled their counterparts in electricity, Grizzly Electric for the league crown.
Although there were only two players on the court for an individual match the athletes were competing as part of a team. The players would earn points for their team. The highest amount of points they would win per match was five.
The team with the most points after all members played was the playoff winner.
The Electrical Shop Ltd., put on a dominating performance on the final day winning all six of their matches against the Grizzly Electric side earning 30 points compared to nine.
Those in attendance got to watch some high-quality squash. The battle of the number one players for each side, Ehsan Idrees vs. Sam Penner was a five-set thriller.
The match went back-and-forth as both competitors traded wins to force a fifth and deciding game. Idrees was able to come out on top taking the game 11-6.
The battle of the number two players Stephen Buckler and Erik Jacobsen also went the distance, in the final game of the evening.
Both players traded wins on the way to the deciding fifth game. Buckler was able to prevail 11-6.
After the match, Buckler revealed what his thoughts were going into the fifth game.
“You’re exhausted,” said Buckler. “After every game, you just have to think about what you can improve on for the next game. You can’t get down on yourself. The second you start second-guessing yourself or start getting angry with yourself, you can’t focus. You are making split-second decisions, so you have to be clear minded, it’s important.”
Buckler’s Team had won all their matches before he played but he said he wasn’t feeling the pressure to complete the sweep.
“I was asking everyone before my match because the last time I played Erik it went five games like tonight, except he had match point in the third game so he was about to sweep me three/zero so I was feeling the pressure,” said Buckler. “It felt good knowing my stepped up for me so I wasn’t too worried about that.”
In the other championship games, Keegan Kwok downed Will Chetcuti in straight games. Thibault Rondel needed four games against Adam Humphrey to win the match. Ber Rethore downed Peter Murdoch 3-1.
Shayna Haley defeated O’Shea Jephson in straight games. The first game of the match went well beyond the 11th point and winning point. Having to win by two, Haley eventually came out on top 17-15.
In the third place matches, Yukon Tree Services was able to outlast Better Bookkeeping. The Yukon Tree Services earned 15 points to Better Bookkeeping’s 10, taking three matches to two.
Dylan Letang defeated Mackenzie Cameron, Ivan Johnson beat Ava Cairns-Locke and Kynan McIntyre outlasted Gurmaan Rai for the Yukon Tree Services wins.
Alex Jobin downed Leif Austad and Logan Godin needed just three games to beat Nikhil Sharma to give Better Bookkeeping its wins.
The Thursday league will have its winner also determined this week.
Squash Yukon will be hosting the Squash Wars The Return of the Serve tournament from May 2-5.
