Yukon speedskaters closed out their season Sunday afternoon at the Canada Games Centre.

Nineteen skaters hit the ice for their last dashes around the oval as the Whitehorse Rapids Speed Skating Club hosted the Yukon Championships.

Malcolm Taggart, Huxley Briggs and Joshua Lauer each won four races, while Micah Taggart-Cox and Lisa Freeman each took three.

Many of the skaters also finished the year by once again recording new personal-best times.

Yukon rinks start slow at curling masters

The 2016 Canadian Masters Curling Championship didn’t get off to a great start for Yukon’s rinks.

Darol Stuart and Ellen Johnson are both 1-5 at the event being staged in Kings County, N.S.

Stuart’s lone win came over Northwest Territories this morning, 10-4, while Johnson beat Prince Edward Island 8-7 today.

Stuart’s rink includes third Gord Zealand, second Bob Walker and lead Clarence Jack, while Johnson’s foursome is rounded out by third Ev Pasichnyk, second Val Whelan and lead Elaine Sumner.

The tournament wraps up Sunday.

In other curling news, Bob and Jody Smallwood went 2-5 at mixed doubles nationals, while Leslie Grant and Walter Wallingham finished 4-5 and 3-6, respectively, at senior nationals.

Minor midget hockey program to continue

Hockey Yukon will host a spring identification camp next month to determine next season’s U16 Yukon Mustangs roster.

The camp will take place May 13 to 15 at the Canada Games Centre.

Players born in 2001 are eligible to participate and will skate with minor midget talent from Yukon, northern British Columbia, Alberta and the N.W.T.
