Sports in brief: skiers lauded for breakout seasons

Dahria Beatty and Knute Johnsgaard have been named Canada’s “breakthrough skiers of the year” by a high-profile cross-country ski website.

Dahria Beatty and Knute Johnsgaard have been named Canada’s “breakthrough skiers of the year” by a high-profile cross-country ski website.

FasterSkier.com honoured the two Yukoners on Monday.

Beatty, 22, is the “definition of breakthrough skier of the year,” the story stated, with her most notable highlight being a 15th-place finish in a World Cup classic sprint in Alberta.

She also finished the season as the Haywood NorAm leader and won two gold medals at nationals held here.

Meanwhile, Johnsgaard finished third in Haywood NorAm standings.

The 23-year-old raced 10 World Cup events this season, placing 29th in a Quebec freestyle sprint.

Five locals complete Boston Marathon

Five Yukoners were amongst the thousands running through the streets of Boston on Monday.

Keith Thaxter, 54, was the first Whitehorse runner to finish the 120th Boston Marathon, in 3:37:51. He finished in 10,099th place.

Amelia Fraser, 30, crossed the line in 3:58:50, followed by Joanne Van Bibber-Widrig (4:16:06).

Kathryne Bruner (4:30:54) and Polly Thorp (4:33:28) were the other participants from the territory.

Yukoners named to Team North rosters

Eleven hockey players and a coach will represent Yukon at the 2016 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships.

The six-day tournament will be held May 2 to 7 at the Iceland Sports Complex in Mississauga, Ont.

Kaine Comin, Johnny Elias, Jonas Leas, Benjamin McLelland and Josh Tetlichi will play on the male team, which features players from all three territories.

Shania Hogan, Monica Johnson, Zoe Leas, Samantha McLeod, Maya Oakley and Sierra Oakley will suit up for the female team which also includes assistant coach Candice MacEachen.
