Arnie the Terminator
Arnold Hedstrom inspired his Klondike Business Solutions side to an improbable tie in over-35 soccer action this weekend.
His team was struggling to hold a fierce Yukon Brewing side after Pat Shaw, David Rayo and man mountain Jeff Ford (2) goals had put Brew in front, but Hedstrom, playing with a new-found confidence and an eye for the goal, scored to start a remarkable comeback that lead to a 4-4 result that both teams were satisfied with.
Hedstom’s CBC colleague Leonard Linklater had a strong game in midfield for Yukon Brewing, while KBS were glad of Keith Welch’s return to the side.
Scoring for KBS were Jim Brown, Charlie Macleod and Welch.
Murphy’s slumber is over
Eric Murphy, last year’s golden boot winner, kick-started his campaign with a well-taken hat trick, as his Tony’s Pizza side defeated Pepsi 7-5 in a lively game, with each team having chances to win.
Both squads have a talented roster and the game was screaming out for a hero. Step forward Irishman Murphy, who was supported by goals from Adil Khalik, Rob Florkiewicz, Ben Mercier and Jan Van den Hoorn.
Pepsi’s captain and talisman Phil Jackson led the counter attack with his trademark searing runs, which netted him two goals, but it proved to be too little too late.
Pepsi’s other scorers were Danny Macdonald and JP Ladroue.

OLDTIMER HOCKEY LEAGUE
Liley against the world
Walt Liley scored three of Kilrich’s four goals to tie the Firth Rangers in the weekend’s draw.
Mike Jim got Kilrich on the board first, with a goal at 7:44, followed by Liley’s first at 3:02. The Firth Rangers’ Wynn Griffith got his team within one at 2:20, but they went into intermission with Kilirch leading 3-1 after Liley scored with three seconds remaining in the period.
Bill Bohmer shortened the deficit at 20:00, but Liley got on the board with his third 10 seconds later to keep his team up by two.
In the end, Clint Ireland and Kerry Pettitt each added a goal for the Rangers to make the game 4-4.
Price’s hat trick not enough
A hat trick performance from Kirk Price still wasn’t enough as the Medicine Chest lost 5-6 to Tim Hortons.
Ed van Randen got Tim Hortons on the board after about 10 minutes. Bill Cullens answered at 7:25 for Medicine Chest to tie the game up.
After a flurry of Tim Hortons goals in the second half of the first period ( Jeff O’Farrell at 6:23, Dennis Zimmerman at 5:40 and van Randen at 1:27) it looked like they would be up by three heading into the final period, but Kirk Price scored with 15 seconds remaining to keep his Medicine Chest within striking distance.
Jason Cunning opened scoring for Tim Hortons early in the second.
Medicine Chest got back on the board with shots from Price and Peter Kirby, before Tim Hortons’ Peter Johnston added a goal of his own.
Price finished off his hat trick with 4:23 remaining in the game, to come within one of Tim Hortons. But the Medicine Chest ultimately couldn’t finish the job.
