Yukon’s mushing season will kick off this Sunday with a Twister race in the Ibex Valley.

The event will begin with registration at 10 a.m., followed by a musher’s meeting and race.

There are two race options: a 12-mile trail for six dogs and a sled, or two dogs and skis; or 3.5 miles for two to four dogs and a sled, or one dog and skis.

Next weekend, a stage race is tentatively planned in Mount Lorne.

The Mount Lorne Christmas Classic is an early season mid-distance race to be held over two days if snow levels allow.

In total, there are seven races on the Dog Powered Sports Association of the Yukon’s schedule.

Pettitt point streak rolls on with Jr. B Steam

It’s not quite Patrick Kane territory, but it’s getting close.

Yukoner Riley Pettitt is riding a 15-game point streak for the Jr. B Summerland Steam, in which he has 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists).

He has a point in every game since Oct. 18 with season totals of 13 goals and 16 assists.

The 19-year-old forward plays with two other Yukon products in Summerland, B.C. – Wyatt Gale and Jarrett Malchow.

The trio has combined for 47 points over the past 16 games.

The Steam (19-9) host Kole Comin and the Kamloops Storm (20-8) in KIJHL action tonight.

Kane, a Chicago Blackhawks star, extended his franchise-best points streak to 24 games yesterday.

Soccer stars set for Christmas Showcase

It’s a holiday tradition for Yukon’s top soccer players.

On Dec. 23, the territory’s soccer stars will gather at the Canada Games Centre for the annual Christmas Showcase.

A women’s game at 6:15 p.m. will be followed by a men’s game at 7:30.

Both games will pit senior select squads versus Total Soccer Excellence Academy teams.

A Jr. Strikers Selects intrasquad will be held at intermission.

Another annual holiday soccer tradition will also take place at Vanier Catholic Secondary School.

The 2015 Christmas Insomnia Tournament goes Dec. 18 to 20.
