Sports Experts and Yukon Brewing played the final game of the Yukon Broomball Association season on Saturday at the broomball arena.
Sports Experts and Yukon Brewing played the final game of the Yukon Broomball Association season on Saturday at the broomball arena.
It was a tale of two halves, as Sports Experts dominated the first 20 minutes only to have their intensity met by Yukon Brewing in the second 20-minute stanza.
The broomball championship trophy was not handed out the year prior because the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered the season before playoffs.
Sports Experts built an early 2-0 lead that Brewing could not overcome, taking the game and the 2021 championship 2-1.
From the opening face-off, Sports Experts took control of the early action.
They worked the ball into the Yukon Brewing end of the ice and patiently waited for their opportunities to fire on net.
Their control led to success about six minutes into the opening period. Dave Stehelin corralled a pass and cut into the centre of the ice.
Once in prime shooting position, he fired away to give Sports Experts the lead.
Sports Experts continued to hold the ball in the Yukon Brewing zone after their initial goal, however, Brewing’s defence did tighten.
They began to get their sticks in the passing lanes and get out and running. Sports Experts, using their speed were able to get back on defence to take away the shooting lanes.
Sports Experts doubled their lead near the conclusion of the opening frame.
After stifling a Yukon Brewing break, Nicolas Nadon took control of the ball and went zooming down the ice. He split the two defenders and let loose a rocket into the top part of the net to give Sports Experts the 2-0 lead.
They took that lead into the second, and final, period.
Down two with only 20 minutes remaining in their season, Yukon Brewing came out in force. Unlike the first frame, it was Yukon Brewing who was controlling the action in the Sports Experts zone.
Try as they might, Sports Experts could not clear the zone. Brewing began getting shots on net but was unable to find the twine.
Yukon Brewing’s pressure culminated in a goal with seven minutes remaining in the game. Erin Stehelin worked his way into the centre of the ice, between the face-off circles, and zipped a shot low corner.
After the goal, Yukon Brewing still controlled the ball, but Sports Experts wouldn’t allow another shot to find its way on net.
Yukon Brewing pulled the goalie for the extra attacker but could not take advantage of the extra player.
As the buzzer sounded, the Sports Experts players jumped onto the ice to celebrate.
