The Spidermonkeys hit their stride when they needed.
The Spidermonkeys hit their stride when they needed.
The club was fresh off their Yukon Broomball Association finals win over Capital Towing in March when they and four Whitehorse teams played for the KPI Cup in Haines Junction over the weekend.
The Yukon News Spidermonkeys again met Capital Towing in the finals of the Function in the Junction, as it's commonly called, again knocking off their rivals, this time 4-1.
"Overall it was an amazing team effort: real balanced scoring, amazing defense and outstanding goaltending, so that was the key,” said Shayne Fairman, acting captain for the Spidermonkeys in Haines Junction.
"I've been playing for over 20 years. I don't think any of the teams I've ever been on have ever won the KPI Cup.”
The Spidermonkeys lost two key players for the tourney, league leading scorer Josh Nash and third in league scoring Chris Nash.
Five of the seven league teams made the trip. Some of the players left over from the two teams that didn't attend were distributed onto the five competing teams.
To offset the firepower lost with the Nash's, the Spidermonkeys picked up sharpshooter Justin Saunders, who finished the league second in scoring.
And it paid: Saunders tied for the club's high-goal tally with three in six games.
Teammate Nick Wilson also scored three, while Fairman was next in team scoring with two.
Each of the three girls on the team scored.
"The key was the balanced scoring – we had eight different goal scorers,” Fairman said.
League Rookie of the Year winner Darryl Cann was stellar in net, allowing just four goals all tournament.
"Teams were getting frustrated, we weren't giving up very many goals,” Fairman said.
The Spidermonkeys netted 14 total goals.
They started their championship run with a 2-0 win over Ridge Pub, followed by back-to-back 2-1 victories over both the Whitehorse Motors Mustangs and Builders.
The Spidermonkeys downed Capital Towing 1-0 to end the round robin.
Saunders failed to hit the target in the club's first four games.
"It was very rare, but he had been responsible for a lot of the goals, because he was attracting a lot of attention defensively, which was opening up opportunities for others,” Fairman said.
"The standings were pretty tight in the round robin. Every game was close.”
The Spidermonkeys then clashed with the Motors Mustangs in the semi-finals, taking that bout 3-1 on their road to the cup.
But it's not all work at the Function in the Junction, Fairman said.
"That's the other aspect of the Function in the Junction: it's lots of games over a short period of time, interspersed with much socializing. It's a hoot.”
He added that the tournament is the perfect cap to a promising year for Yukon broomball.
Fairman wanted to thank the league executive for doing "such a great job this year.”
"It was an amazing season overall, lots of renewed interest in the league, new teams, new players. Milford Allain has done a great job as league president to keep it all going.”
