The Flame of Hope will return to the streets of Whitehorse on Friday.
The Yukon Law Enforcement Torch Run will take place at 1 p.m. Aug. 7 to increase awareness of the Special Olympics.
The run will begin at the local RCMP detachment on Fourth Ave.
Runners will turn right on Main Street, then take a left on Second Ave., before finishing up at Home Hardware – the race’s presenting sponsor.
This year’s run is in anticipation of the Northwestel Development Games, which will take place Saturday in Haines Junction.
More than 30 athletes will participate in a full day of sport, including basketball, bocce and athletics.
“Yukon law enforcement officers are proud to carry the torch to recognize over 90 amazing Yukon athletes with an intellectual disability,” said Const. Ben Kingdon, the territory’s director of the torch run.
The run is held across the country and has raised millions for the cause since its inception in 1981.
Meanwhile, the fourth annual Run Wild event will be held at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve on Discovery Day, Aug. 17.
Run Wild is a five-kilometre run or walk around the scenic figure-eight loop of the preserve.
The charity run will raise funds for the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Research Centre and its continued care of injured and orphaned wildlife, said Lindsay Caskenette, manager of visitor services.
She also alluded to a “special experience” occurring during the event.
