It's just a few years old, but the Southern Lakes Bike Loppet has already established itself as one of the marque cycling events in the Yukon.

The annual race connects five Yukon communities: Tagish, Carcross, Mt. Lorne, Golden Horn and Marsh Lake. The event is organized by all five communities, which each have a checkpoint along the 173-km course.

Every year a new community will be picked to host the race. This year it was Tagish, while in 2008 the honour went to Marsh Lake.

The course consists of a loop around the Southern Lakes.

Yellow t-shirts were given out as prizes, but perhaps the most memorable prize went to the Yukon Conservation Society's team. The five-person mixed team took home "The Crooked Wheel Award," a prize given to the slowest finishing time. The group finished at 6:41:00.

"It went really smooth and Tagish did a great job with hosting," said Simi Morrison, this year's Chief of Race.

A total of 72 riders and around 40 volunteers took part in what was the second annual race.
