Soir de Semaine takes top prize at volleyball challenge

A little rest and relaxation seemed to be just what the players on Soir de Semaine needed before Thursday's Corporate Volleyball Challenge final.

After waiting more than 30 minutes on the sidelines, the group put together a dominating display against Albino Rhino. The final score was 13-4.

The lengthy time off was a result of Soir de Semaine clinching a spot in the final thanks to its 4-0 record.

For Soir de Semaine team captain Alain Desrochers, who finished as a runner up in last year's volleyball challenge, Thursday's win came as sweet redemption.

His team's loss in 2008 occurred despite the group having a significant amount of time off before the final. This year, however, Desrochers came into the tournament with a slightly different team and outlook.

"This year I thought it should be more control guys," he said. "I bet on control instead of power. Everybody was digging balls and putting the ball on the setter's head."

Soir de Semaine's next big event will be at Flippers East Coast Pub on June 18 and 19, where the French Canadian band will preform.

Before the loss, Albino Rhino had won five straight games, with its only loss coming at the hands of Soir de Semaine.

In its second tilt against the French Canadian music group, Albino Rhino wasted little time taking an early lead.

However, some nice serves by Al Foster brought Soir de Semaine right back into the contest and the group kept going from there. When the two teams switched sides, Soir de Semaine enjoyed a 7-2 lead.

The squad didn't change tactics and despite a few nice rallies, Albino Rhino wasn't able to get back into the match.

With the win, Soir de Semaine walked away with the top prize, a $200 gift certificate to the High Country Inn.

Other winners at the city's 15th annual Corporate Volleyball Challenge included the Disco Daisies, which won the best costume category.

The Disco Daisies outfits were a cross between the ‘60s and ‘70s wear. Team members showcased their creativity, wearing wigs, hippie glasses, love beads and scarfs.

"If we could have been out here in platforms and bell-bottoms we would have done that too," said Nikki Leigh, a member on the team.

Leigh said the costume detail was a result of the team not having that much experience playing volleyball.

"We decided to go for the costume prize instead," she said. "We got creative and someone threw the idea out there and we went with it."

She said the team didn't win a single game, but taking the top costume prize made up for it.

The costume award was $100 to Mexican restaurant Sanchez Cantina.

Despite being eliminated early on from the volleyball challenge, the Disco Daisies had a couple of reason to stick around.

In addition to waiting for the costume announcement, the group was also busy cheering on fellow city day camp co-workers, playing on the Wings of Change, which made it all the way to the semi-finals.

"We are all part of the city day camp, so after we lost we were their cheer leading squad," Leigh said. "They are a pretty intense group, but they are really positive and have fun while they are out there.

"I think that is really why they have done so well. Skill only gets you so far and the rest is all attitude."

All 12 players on both teams will go out to Sanchez Cantina to celebrate, Leigh said.

Noria Deacon was one of the players on Wings of Change, who all wore little wings on the back of their shirts, purchased at the Dollar Store.

Deacon was feeling pretty good about her team heading into the semi-final matchup against Albino Rhino.

"We did pretty good," she said of their play that far at the tournament. "We won our first three games."

She said her team was hoping to finish first overall.

"Both teams had goals," Deacon said. "The Disco Daisies got best outfit and we wanted to come in first place."

Albino Rhino ended up beating Wings of Change 12-5 in the semi-final.

All Corporate Volleyball Challenge matches had a 15 minute time limit.

Other prizes handed out on Thursday included most enthusiastic team and best name.

The prize for most enthusiastic was a $75 certificate to Tony's Pizza, won by Captain Peg Leg and the Wenches, and the best team name was Czech This Out. They were given a $75 certificate to Baked Cafe.

Marcus Waterreus was one of the members on Czech This Out, which had three players that were born in the Czech Republic.

The team, despite not having a lot of experienced volleyball players, was one of the final squads to get eliminated. Waterreus wasn't too upset about not making it to the final though.

"I was upset that we were winning because I wanted to go for beer," he joked.

Fifteen teams took part in this year's tournament, which began around 5:30 p.m. at Rotary Peace Park on the beach volleyball court.

"We are focusing more on the fun aspect than the competition aspect," said city leisure program coordinator Krista Mroz. "People like beach volleyball and they don't often get a chance to play that."
