Softball Yukon has seen a number of upgrades to its facilities this summer.
And the association is about to get another.
Yukon government's Community Development Fund (CDF) is contributing more than $857,000 toward a variety of community projects, including sport and recreation, in the latest tier two intake.
Softball Yukon is one of the successful applicants, receiving $75,000 to build a second storey on its utility building and upgrade existing plumbing and electrical service.
"The Senior Women's Fast Pitch World Championships are coming to Whitehorse in 2012 and we need to make these necessary upgrades to comply with championship regulations,” said George Arcand, Softball Yukon's executive director.
"Our building is also 30 years old so it's time for better and more economical utilities.
"Softball has been a thriving sport throughout Yukon and the CDF will also help us to create a space to display the history of the sport of softball in Yukon.”
But Whitehorse won't be the only Yukon centre to receive funding from the CDF.
The Mayo Community Club is another successful applicant, receiving $48,297 for extensive improvements to the community ball diamond.
"For some time now our ball diamond has become unusable due to drainage problems and overall deterioration,” said Ian Spencer, Mayo Community Club secretary-treasurer. "With these problems fixed, we can continue with our annual Canada Day invitational tournament and create more interest in the community.
"We plan to use some volunteers to help with the work, including a contractor on the Mayo B hydro project that will be donating some of its equipment and time doing earth moving for us, and we are grateful for this help.”
Softball Yukon has enjoyed a summer of upgrades.
Earlier this summer, Softball Yukon upgraded the Field 1 and 2 dugouts at the Pepsi Softball Centre at a cost of $20,000-$30,000.
That came in time for the Team Canada Senior Women's Fast Pitch selection camp from June 29-July 7 at the complex.
The new dugouts are eight feet wide by 34 feet long, compared to the old dugouts which were at six feet wide and 25 feet long.
The Community Development Fund offers three funding levels.
Tier 1 is available for requests up to $20,000. Tier 2 is available for applicants requesting $20,001 to $75,000, and Tier 3 is available for requests over $75,000.
The next intake deadline for Tier 2 projects is September 15.
Organizations are strongly encouraged to contact Community Development Advisors well before the deadlines for assistance with their applications and to develop project ideas.
